But Beautiful

Documentary (Post-Production)

Julie wilson sang to you like you were the only person in the room.

She mesmerized audiences no matter who they were. Her beauty and command of the material compelled critics to dub her the “Queen of Cabaret.” For 60 years, Julie was a must-see performer and remained an inspiration to many after she permanently left the stage, but to no one more than Julie’s only remaining son, Holt McCallany.

This is the story of Julie, told by Holt as he celebrates his mother in her final years. Through archival films, rare recordings of her performances, and three years of filming late in Julie’s life, we revisit her career in New York supper clubs, on Broadway, and in Hollywood.

An intimate portrait of a retired performer and her son’s quest to honor his mother. Our story is that of love, loss, rediscovery, and a mother-and-son bond beyond all others.
